Meltdown and Spectre Vulnerabilities and HPSS

From what is known about the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities, any software (including HPSS) running on a vulnerable system could potentially be effected. Since this is essentially a hardware design issue, the systems are vulnerable no matter what software may be running on it.  Neither of these vulnerabilities directly affect HPSS operations, however, an attacker could use these vulnerabilities to gain access to privileged information residing on the system.

Most deployed HPSS systems are well protected behind firewalls and do not have users that directly access the servers.  Nonetheless, we encourage all HPSS customer sites to work with their own security team and assess the risk to their systems  (just like you would for any other security problem).  Remember, all changes to the system should be tested on your test systems before applying to the production systems.

You will need to understand the risks of applying any patches, including the possible performance impacts to your systems. Performance information is going to be different from site to site and probably very CPU dependent. Some older CPUs may see a larger performance impact than newer CPUs. Red Hat has published tips on how to tune around some of the potential performance issues.
